How did you get your job there? So I walked in and I took a lap around the store. Right before I left, the manager came up to me and asked me if I was interested in a position.
It was flattering, and I needed a job, so I was like, "Oh, yeah, definitely. Did you have to do an interview? I didn't even interview. She on the spot gave me her information and told me where to apply so they had all my information.
She called me a couple days after I submitted my application and I came in for my first day. Do you think that a person's looks or clothing has to do with their recruitment if they're recruited while walking through the store?
Oh, absolutely, percent. That's why it doesn't happen very often. Abercrombie has dealt with a lot of backlash for the things that he's said. I think it's pretty sad just because, as a former customer, all of this was in the news, and I used to always think and wonder why he wasn't more inclusive about his brand.
Especially if you're running a business, I think excluding certain types of people is completely the wrong thing to be doing. What do you normally wear to work? I've always loved their jeggings, even before I started working at the store. I'll normally throw on a pair of jeggings, and I have chunky sweaters and cardigans I put on when it's colder out.
I'm actually a fan of Abercrombie's flowy pants. I call them funky pants, because they're just so colorful and they have really cool patterns and they fit on your body so well. So when the weather's nice, I like to wear those. And they're really light so they're easy to wear in the store. How would you describe it now? I would describe the look as becoming less associated with a brand and more conducive to the lifestyle of someone who's young, someone who pays attention to trends, someone who isn't too, too polished.
Abercrombie has always been about walking that fine line between polished and a little bit edgy. It definitely has more of a West Coast, chill vibe. Up until recently they didn't sell black. Black is a very statement color for the East Coast, but it's definitely not a trademark of the West Coast style.
I think Abercrombie is really bred from the West Coast. What do you think of the clothes? To be honest, before I started working there, I wore their jeggings, but I didn't really like the whole moose logo.
I didn't have any appreciation for that. I have a simple, polished style, and I wear a lot of black. But when I got the job, I started finding little things around the store that I like. Probably fewer than I think four of those are jeggings. I have this jumpsuit in a floral print that's very subtle and not completely in your face like a lot of the floral prints that Abercrombie uses. It's one of my favorite things to wear.
I just throw a cardigan over it and wear it to work when it's nice out. Do you ever work on the men's side of store? Yes, I work on the women's side, the men's side, and at the cash register. How do you help the guys find what they need? Helping male customers is always great because I do a lot of flirting, to be honest.
Just because it's so much easier to sell to a guy if you tell them they look good in what they're wearing, whereas with a girl, it isn't always so cut and dry because they can be more particular about the fit of clothing and colors.
Guys are so easy. Guys come in all the time and ask me really basic questions about clothing, and I'm just like, "Oh my gosh, I can help you! Come with me," and I'll just take them around the store and give them things to try on and it usually works out pretty well for them in the end. What was that like? In the aughts, store associates, the ones hot enough to survive the hiring process, had to abide by an extensive, ridiculous, "look policy.
Even more humiliating was the plight of plus-sized employees. Fortunately, these employees were eventually released from their fascistically enforced Casual Friday.
