When you and I bow to our true nature, we are one. My soul recognizes your soul. We are the same, we are one. I honor the place in you that is the same as it is in me.

In his translation of the 1,year-old spiritual text The Recognition Sutras , Tantrik scholar Christopher Wallis describes how this understanding might affect your approach to life: Once you become aware of the true nature of reality, everything you do becomes an act of reverence. It can be used by anyone, to greet anyone — from strangers to family and friends — at any time of day. It remains an acknowledgement of a spiritual connection, not just a greeting.

In the West its use is more limited — to yogis and yoga classes. Which is a shame. Teachers will say the term to their students, who will repeat it back, as a sign of mutual gratitude towards each other, and recognition of the divine light within us all. Simply repeating Namaste at the end of a class can bring you back from focusing on the self in yoga, to connecting with others around you.

Saying Namaste at the end of a yoga session also shows respect and thankfulness to the yoga teachers of the past — connecting yogis past and present. You can incorporate Namaste into your practice whether you do yoga by yourself or with other people. Try closing your eyes, inhaling deeply, and saying Namaste as you exhale. This can deepen your meditation, by allowing you to surrender your thoughts and give thanks to the world.

To most Westerners, yoga is the practice of physical exercise, increasing flexibility, and strengthening muscles.

This physical-only aspect of yoga is actually called asana , not genuine yoga. However, the Eastern philosophy behind yoga is believed to be an ancient Hindu process to enlightenment and spiritual growth.

The question then becomes whether or not yoga is something Christians should or should not participate in. Christians and Meditation.

For some Christians, yoga is an opportunity for prayer. That's why in most classes, the teacher says the English translation for the poses, such as downward dog, happy baby, or tree pose.

But the greeting of "namaste," has remained, and honors the ancient traditions of yoga. Tarkeshi says she hopes people will take the spirit of "namaste" beyond the studio and carry it with them through everyday life.

To her, "namaste" is about more than acknowledging the light in people. Here's why yoga is so good for you. And these are Jessica Biel's favorite yoga poses.
